There is a reason that Christmas is coined as the “most wonderful time of the year”. Not because of presents (even though we can all be honest and admit that we do love them a little bit!), but because of all of the other things that come along with it. Gingerbread houses, Christmas lights twinkling down every street, all the food, Christmas movies, families coming together from across oceans and countries, and the magic that we all feel. Whether you are religious or not, it is still an opportunity to celebrate with all of your loved ones. I feel confident that I can speak for many people when I say that some of our fondest childhood memories stemmed around this holiday. Hunting for Christmas trees, drinking hot chocolate, singing Christmas carols, and building snowmen were all rights of passage for so many of us. Becoming a parent and sharing Christmas with your children means getting to pass along so many of these traditions. You get to see all of magic through their eyes and it takes you right back to when you were a kid. Kids or not, there is a lot to do to prepare for Christmas and the chaos surrounding the shopping, the cooking, and the decorating can all feel overwhelming. If you stop and think about it though, it truly is worth it when it all comes together. Stand back and marvel in the moments. Watching family standing around a kitchen island drinking eggnog and laughing, seeing the snow falling quietly outside your window in the evening (well…..we here in Kamloops are still waiting on this!), hearing Bing Crosby sing “White Christmas” over your car stereo, and watching the joy on a child’s face (even if it isn’t your own) when they see Santa at the mall. Christmas isn’t just presents and lights and Santa Claus; Christmas is a time to recognize how lucky we are to be here and to have moments to celebrate the magic that still exists in the world. Yes, there is darkness, but there is also so much beauty. As we roll into the holidays and say goodbye to 2018, we here at BME ask you to take just a minute to remember all of this. Hug your family a little tighter, laugh a little louder, and spread love like wildfire. There is no time better than right now.
